New York Times Endorses OpenDNS

Pogue

It's been an exciting few weeks at OpenDNS. First, noted New York Times consumer technology columnist David Pogue gave a rave review to OpenDNS. "I'm about to make your life better," he promised readers at the beginning of his column, via — what else? — an introduction to OpenDNS.

Then, we experienced our biggest week of growth ever! Account creation was up seven times the average, sales of Deluxe -- our premium, ad-free version designed for home users like you -- had their best week ever, visits to OpenDNS.com skyrocketed … The New York Times article helped, but another big factor was people like you telling their friends about OpenDNS through emails, tweets and Facebook sharing. Thank you for your support!

And if you haven't read the article, yet, check it out.

OpenDNS Named WEF 2011 Technology Pioneer

WEF Logo

We couldn't be more excited to announce that OpenDNS has been named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer for 2011. The Technology Pioneers are companies that "represent the cutting edge in innovation and are poised to have a critical impact on the future of business, industry and society."

What's even cooler is that when we look at previous winners of this award, it reads like a who's who of the Internet — Mozilla, Google, PayPal, Twitter and Mint are just five examples. And, as part of the award, CEO David Ulevitch will be heading to the World Economic Forum in Davos this January. Very exciting all around!

How-To: Set Up Stats On Your Network

OpenDNS Stats

With OpenDNS it's simple to see which websites people on your network are visiting. Not only can you see the most popular websites being visited, you can also see which blocked websites users on your network are attempting to access and more.

  • First, choose and select your network.
  • Then, select the "Stats and logs" option and click the checkbox to enable stats and logs.
  • Once you do, select "apply" and we'll start logging data about where employees on your network are visiting.

Next month: Using OpenDNS stats to your advantage. See which websites are visited on your home network and easily block the problematic ones.

How We've Stopped 1 Million Online Scams

PhishTank

Good news: Using OpenDNS means you and your network are protected against identity theft websites commonly known as "phishing". One of the ways we identify which sites are fraudulent, and which ones are legitimate, is through PhishTank.com, the community-driven site we operate that we're proud to report is the world's largest and fastest-moving clearinghouse of phishing data.

Recently, the 1-millionth phish was submitted to PhishTank. That number gives you a sense of how many of these scammy and nefarious websites are out there — and why it's so important to use OpenDNS to protect your home Internet. Thanks so much to the PhishTank community for helping find and flag these websites. If you want to learn more about how PhishTank works, check out the PhishTank FAQs.

Facebook Contest: How Would You Describe OpenDNS?

When we describe OpenDNS, we like to say it makes your Internet "safer, faster, smarter and more reliable." While this description is pretty spot on, we know you have your own way of describing OpenDNS, too.

From now until September 15, we'll be running a contest on our Facebook page. All you need to do to enter is become a Fan of us on Facebook, and then post your description of OpenDNS on our wall. We'll send t-shirts to our five favorite slogans and descriptions. Let the best slogan win :)

Customer Spotlight: Romano's Macaroni Grill

Romano's Macaroni Grill

We love Romano's Macaroni Grill — especially the Pasta Milano. If you haven't tried it yet, we highly recommend it!

The restaurant chain has more than 14,000 employees at 200 restaurants worldwide and recently deployed OpenDNS Enterprise for centralized content filtering and enhanced malware protection across every location. The company chose OpenDNS Enterprise after looking at a variety of content filtering options including an appliance-based solution from Juniper. However the centralized management from OpenDNS and the fact that IT staff could deploy the service to all 200 restaurants in minutes made OpenDNS Enterprise a no brainer.
