Life In The Fast Lane

If you're like me, you've often dreamt of what it must be like to be a hunky, intelligent physician living in an Australian beach-side paradise. No? Well, you may not admit it, but I know I'm not the only one. Until recently, the only way I could even come close to experiencing my dream was to watch box sets of Grey's Anatomy interspersed by the two-episode run of Baywatch Down Under. Not a bad way to spend your Saturday, but it is a bit time consuming. I knew there had to be a better way.

Enter Dr. Mike Cadogan, a down-under doc who is living the dream. With writing partner Dr. Chris Nickson, he authors the blog Life in the Fast Lane--a mashup of posts on medical education, general scientific information, and life as a busy ER doctor and father. This well-written blog is very informative; it's smart enough to hold the attention of fellow doctors and general enough to entertain the causal reader too. Best of all, it's my one-stop-shop for fantasy life fulfillment! Ahh, I can almost smell the salty sea air and feel the ocean breeze rippling through my scrubs.

Here are a couple of excerpts from an interview I did with Dr. Cadogan:

On why he blogs...Working in emergency medicine can be isolating. The shifts are long, the work is intense and the pressure is relentless. Having a local departmental community is essential to retain one's sanity. Being able to write about issues that concern us gives an individual as well as a collaborative debrief from the stress we encounter on a daily basis.

Community is essential to our ability to survive in the job and sharing our humour, educational resources and experiences is a very satisfying pastime. I feel we are making a valid contribution to the medical community by sharing our experiences – after all a problem shared is a problem halved…

On balancing work with his main passion...My biggest passion in my life is my family.

Through strict time-management and an innate aversion to sleep I manage to complete my work-related tasks when the kids are either at school or asleep.

Technological advancement has streamlined the efficiency with which I can disseminate my educational resources to a wider audience through HealthEngine.com.au and Life in the Fast Lane. I can now research, write, post, discuss and interact with the audience on the fly using mobile technology.

This leaves more time to do what I love most in the world…be a father.
