Singapore Datacenter is Now Online

Singapore Map

Our Singpore datacenter is now online and serving production OpenDNS traffic. The Singapore server marks our 12th datacenter globally and the first of a number planned for Asia.

One of the benefits of OpenDNS is that we use Anycast routing in how we run our network, which means that no matter where you are in the world, your DNS requests route through our closest datacenter. For those in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, India and throughout Asia, the new datacenter promises an even faster Internet.

That said, Internet routing is not a perfect science and requires a lot of work to get right. If you are in Asia and a traceroute doesn't show you talking to Singapore for DNS we want to know! Please send a traceroute from your computer to 208.67.222.222 to our support department so we can see which networks in Asia aren't seeing our new routes.

Q & A for Dynamic IP Addresses

Some of the most frequent questions we get are about using OpenDNS with a dynamic IP address. You've got questions, we've got answers.

How do I determine what kind of IP address I have?

The best way to determine what kind of IP address you have is to simply call your ISP (Internet Service Provider), and ask.

You'll want to ask if your IP is one of the following: 1. Static (which means your IP address never changes) 2. Dynamic (which means that your public IP address changes periodically) or 3. NAT (which means that your ISP assigns one single IP to groups of subscribers, rather than each subscriber getting their own unique IP address)

Do I have to do anything differently if I have a dynamic IP?

You should make sure to do the following after enabling OpenDNS on your network.

  1. Enable Dynamic IP updating in your network settings
  2. Download and install the Dynamic IP updater client for Windows/Mac or Linux
  3. Resolver cache flush

Meet an OpenDNSer: Jeremie Habib

Jeremy Habib

While OpenDNS is a technology-focused company, not every employee is an engineer or a developer. Meet Jeremie Habib, Enterprise Account Manager, and find out what makes him tick.

Tell us a little bit about what you do at OpenDNS?
I work on the sales team here at OpenDNS. If you are using OpenDNS in a business and have ever expressed an interest in our Enterprise product, chances are we've spoken before. And if you are and we haven't, we should!

Favorite part about working here?
I love the culture here. The customers, our community, our employees are all passionate about OpenDNS and it really makes it a great place to work. I was blown away when I first learned of the huge presence we have on Facebook and in other social media. It's truly exciting to be part of what were doing. Oh ... and the waffles aren't bad either.

Do you have any new years resolutions this year?
To make sure that everyone who wants to have OpenDNS set up on their network has it. And to wear my bike helmet more when I'm on my bike, so people in the office stop yelling at me.

Can You Outsmart an Internet Scammer?

Identifying a phish from a real website can be tough work. Online scammers are getting more and more sophisticated, by making their fraudulent sites a mirror image of the brands they are spoofing.

If you use OpenDNS (and take care to look at the URL of a website you are signing into (check for the https)) you should be safe. But what about those who don't know how to identify a website from a URL? Take this quiz to see how well you do identifying phishing websites and outsmarting Internet bad guys on looks alone. And once you do, post your results on Twitter and Facebook to help get the word out!

Customer Spotlight: WKS Restaurant Corporation

WKS Restaurant Corporation

WKS Restaurant Corporation is a restaurant management company that runs franchises of El Pollo Loco, Corner Bakery Cafe, Denny's and Krispy Kreme and is using OpenDNS across 60 locations throughout Calif, Ariz., Utah, Colo, and N.M. Prior to deploying OpenDNS, WKS Restaurant Corporation did not had a comprehensive Web content filtering solution. Some restaurant franchises had a SonicWall appliance, but others had no filtering. Kyle Hunt, WKS Restaurant Corporation's director of information technology looked at a variety of options for implementing Web content filtering across the company's franchises, but wasn't impressed with what was available — outside of OpenDNS. "We looked at some options, but were hard-pressed to find anything that compared to OpenDNS," he said.
