Introducing FamilyShield
Do you know a parent who is less than tech-savvy but still wants to protect their family online? We recently launched FamilyShield, the absolute simplest and most straightforward way for parents to get started using OpenDNS and protect kids from the bad stuff that's out there.
Since you're already using OpenDNS, you know about the great job we do blocking phishing and malware. With FamilyShield, we wanted to make it super easy for parents to block not only phishing and malware, but pornography, too — and without needing to create an account, add a network or work with dynamic IPs. Once FamilyShield is set up, every device in the home — including mobile devices and video game consoles — is protected. We recommend it for parents who are looking for the simplest, most straightforward service and don't have a need for whitelisting/blacklisting, additional filters or customizations. If you use OpenDNS today, you already get all the benefits of FamilyShield, so there's no need to switch.

Paul Dobbs named SysAdmin of the Year!
Congrats to Paul Dobbs, winner of the 2010 SysAdmin of the Year award! What makes Paul worthy of the prize? He works at the John Howard Society of Durham Region, a nonprofit in Ontario Canada that provides services to nearly 20,000 people per year — and he has a budget of zero dollars per year. Without any annual budget, Paul has increased technology access from 45 computers to nearly 200 computers, from one old NT server to six 2003-R2 servers, unified the network between all offices and reduced Internet costs by more than $6,000 per year.
As Paul has gotten JHS new equipment through grants and funding proposals, he's put the organization in a position where it can actually give computers away to others; it now donates complete systems to JHS clients who have no financial resources to buy their own. Sounds like a winning combination to us!

SysAdmin Appreciation Party: You're invited
While some may associate July with 4th of July, summer vacation and BBQ, here at OpenDNS, July means one thing, and one thing only: System Administrator Appreciation Month. We're celebrating SysAdmins at our fourth annual System Administrator Appreciation Party on July 28 at DNA Lounge in San Francisco's SOMA district (375 Eleventh Street) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Meet the rockstar engineers from OpenDNS, enjoy ice cold beer and delicious eats, pick up some OpenDNS merch and feel celebrated just for being a SysAdmin. C'mon — you've earned it!

Improvements coming to your Dashboard!
We're hard at work rolling out a new Dashboard design. While the underlying functionality you've come to expect will remain the same, you'll notice that we've given things a fresh coat of paint and made some features easier to find. When you visit the redesigned Dashboard, you'll land on a new homepage that summarizes the network or networks you've set up with OpenDNS (don't worry, the My Account page you used to land on is still accessible via the tabs at the top!), along with some shortcuts to the most popular settings and reports.
We'll be rolling out this update early in July. After you've poked around a bit, feel free to let us know your thoughts.

Customer Spotlight: Regence BlueCross BlueShield
Regence BlueCross BlueShield is one of the largest healthcare providers in the U.S., serving millions of Americans in the Midwestern part of the country. Frustrated with the poor performance of the Blue Coat Box and the amount of time and money spent on managing the appliance, network administrators went looking for an alternative.
After an initial trial of OpenDNS, OpenDNS was deployed organization wide, to all 7,000 employees. Since making the switch from Blue Coat, malware and phishing have been eliminated as problems and Web content filtering is now considered an easy-to-manage responsibility — handled through a centralized and Web-based dashboard that's updatable anywhere with Internet access — of the network administration team at BlueCross and BlueShield.
"OpenDNS gives us more layered protection for services that Blue Coat doesn't proxy for. Our total number of security related incidents has decreased since we made the switch to OpenDNS. I recommend it to everyone," said Charles Koenig, Regence BlueCross BlueShield network administrator.
